How aerial silks / hammocks are made

Have
you ever wondered during your workout what the fabric used for your
aerial equipment is and how it is made?
What is the difference
between the fabrics used for aerial hammocks and for aerial silks?

The
fabric used for aerial yoga hammocks is very wide and does not
stretch lengthwise.
Owing to its width you can do lying positions and
exercises in an open hammock and since it does not stretch
lengthwise, you can safely exercise reverse positions because the
aerial hammock will not go down once you sit, stand or lie in it.
You can see it in this video.

The
fabric used for aerial silks stretches slightly lengthwise to absorb
the shock at dropping, falling and performing other dynamic
techniques. It does not have to be as wide as for an aerial hammock
but first and foremost it should not be sleek as it will make
climbing difficult.
In this video you will see different silks fabrics comparison.

For
some time now “natural” fabric has been used to make aerial
hammocks.
This fabric is certainly not 100% natural as silk would be
the only natural material to resist the loads which occur during the
exercises and we know that silk would be much more expensive.
What
does the “natural fabric aerial hammock” mean then?
It stands
for a mixture of polyester and cotton fibres. Polyester provides
strength and cotton makes the aerial hammock soft and nice to touch –
it is a bit like linen but it is not as rigid as raw linen.
Natural
fabric for aerial hammocks is thicker than other fabrics. It can be
regarded either as an advantage or disadvantage. Everything depends
on the preferences of the exercising person.
